(I) Background

The Wuhu "Liu Kaiqu" Sculpture Exhibition has been planned since 2010 and officially launched in 2011. It has gone through 12 years of wind and rain until 2022 and continues to inject fresh artistic energy into Wuhu Sculpture Park.

Over the past 12 years, we have held eight exhibitions, with 316 sculptures installed, attracting over a million visitors and teams annually. The excellent sculpture works from domestic and foreign artists in the park witness the artistic charm of Wuhu Sculpture Park, which transcends time, space, and borders. Together with cultures created by people from various countries, they showcase contemporary values and cultural spirit.

The first and second exhibitions revolve around the theme of "Innovation and Transcendence" within the realm of sculpture''''''''''''''''s ontology language. The third and fourth exhibitions explore the relationship between sculpture and the environment, focusing on the theme "Humanity and Ecology." Embracing the essence of regional cultural heritage, the fifth exhibition, "Wuhu Story," beautifully carries forward its legacy. In a mesmerizing display of ancient and modern art exchanges and collisions, the sixth exhibition embraces the theme "Convergence·Fusion," fostering a bridge between Chinese and foreign art forms. And the seventh and eighth exhibitions creatively explore the theme "Transformation·Creation," presenting new perspectives on the development of Chinese sculpture. Throughout these eight exhibitions, the social value of sculpture art is affirmed from diverse angles. Nestled amidst sunshine, rain, and dew, the thriving Wuhu Sculpture Park effortlessly merges with nature. Its lush grass and shaded trees create a serene atmosphere, inviting citizens to revel in leisure and comfort. This inclusive and open setting nourishes cultural appreciation, enriching the lives of all who visit.

The establishment of Wuhu Sculpture Park represents a pioneering approach aligned with the global trends in sculpture development and has been hailed as the exemplary "Wuhu Model." This innovative model successfully combines the trajectory of international sculpture development with China''''''''''''''''s unique national circumstances. Central to its success are several key factors, including robust government support, the expertise of skilled professionals, adherence to the principles of art, preservation of regional identity, and active engagement of the community. The harmonious collaboration of multiple stakeholders has been instrumental in Wuhu''''''''''''''''s achievements, making it a shining example of Chinese sculpture park construction. The integration of sculptures into the city''''''''''''''''s landscape has earned Wuhu the well-deserved distinction of being recognized as the "City of Sculpture."

The 9th "Liu Kaiqu" Sculpture Exhibition is set to expand beyond the confines of Wuhu Sculpture Park, venturing into a more extensive urban public space. This extension aims to deepen and refine the successful Wuhu Model while unlocking further potential for the park''''''''''''''''s service functions. By integrating art into the city''''''''''''''''s fabric, this exhibition seeks to ignite a more profound level of public engagement with public spaces, fostering a vibrant and interactive cultural environment.

(Ⅱ) Exhibition Theme

Guided by the ethos of "Inheritance and Innovation," the 9th "Liu Kaiqu" Sculpture Exhibition in Wuhu promises to evolve into a splendid artistic gala, seamlessly merging tradition and the future. The exhibition''''''''s thematic emphasis on "Inheritance" underscores the unwavering commitment to traditional culture and the duty of safeguarding historical legacy. And the "Innovation" aspect signifies a stride toward the forthcoming era, a quest for novel forms of expression aligning with the contemporary pulse.

In public art, this directive necessitates an attunement to people''''''''s aspirations and sentiments, thereby birthing creations deeply resonant with their souls. Wuhu''''''''s outdoor sculpture endeavors epitomize this notion, weaving art into urban existence and becoming a shared repository of spiritual enrichment.

In 2023, the "Inheritance and Innovation" Wuhu-The 9th "Liu Kaiqu" Sculpture Exhibition goes beyond a retrospective of prior achievements but also as a lens for prospects. It serves as a melting pot for artists'''''''' ingenuity and sagacity, scattering their creations across every corner of the city, and weaving them into the fabric of daily life. From neighborhood centers to pocket parks, and from science and innovation parks to urban streets, art will merge with people''''''''s routines, infusing the urban milieu with enriched culture and heightened emotions.

Concurrently, the global call for submissions to the sculpture exhibition bridges the geographical divide, enmeshing Wuhu with the global landscape. Art, being a universal language, traverses national boundaries to convey sentiments and thoughts. Through this international outreach, the exhibition will gather contributions from artists from diverse cultural backgrounds, spotlighting a kaleidoscope of artistic styles. Furthermore, it will bestow the world with a more nuanced comprehension of Wuhu—a dynamic, imaginative city on the rise.
