(I) Background
Wuhu, also known as “Wu” or “River City”, is a prefecture-level city of Anhui province, also an important scientific research and education base, double-core city, national regional center city, and Yangtze River Delta City of eastern China. Since ancient times, it has been known as a famous historical and cultural city in China, such as “famous town in Jiangdong District” and “famous city in Wu and Chu Region”. On April 2, 2018, Wuhu was selected by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the National Development and Reform Commission in a new list of innovative cities. Wuhu was awarded the title of “National Forest City” on Forest City Construction Symposium held on October 15, 2018. All this has given Wuhu a further boost in its quest for development with its own characteristics.
The preparation of Wuhu Sculpture Park and the “Liu Kaiqu Award” International Sculpture Exhibition began in 2010. Since its official launch in 2011, China Wuhu “Liu Kaiqu Award” International Sculpture Exhibition has been successfully held for seven consecutive years. As a public welfare undertaking jointly sponsored by China Sculpture Institute, China Academy of Art and Wuhu Municipal People’s Government, through years of efforts, together with sculptors from home and abroad, have jointly created Wuhu Sculpture Park a space of multi-faceted and multi-level artistic and cultural exchanges. In order to bring more excellent sculptures into people’s lives, Wuhu Municipal People’s Government has compiled the Wuhu City Sculpture System Plan, which provides strong planning support for building a “Sculpture Garden City” in Wuhu. At present, China-Wuhu “Liu Kaiqu Award” International Sculpture Exhibition and Wuhu Sculpture Park have won the attention and appreciation from all walks of life at home and abroad, and are praised as one of the first-class public art projects in the world.
Currently, more than 280 sculptures from Chinese and foreign artists are installed in Wuhu Sculpture Park (70 pieces among them are installed in Wuhu Central Park, next to Wuhu Sculpture Park). Outstanding Works and continuous academic influence have made Wuhu Sculpture Park one of the world’s top sculpture parks and earned Wuhu the reputation of being China''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''s “Sculpture City”, “Wuhu Model” of urban public art practice has also been widely praised and learnt.
(Ⅱ) Exhibition Theme
2020 China·Wuhu The 8th “Liu Kaiqu Award” International Sculpture Exhibition will continue the theme of “Transformation · Creation” and explore more possibilities of sculpture in its cultural mission.
Every era has its own spirit, only go with times can art exert huge impacts. China is doing a wide and profound social innovation, and it offers strong power and broad space to cultural transformation and creation. Digging into energy and accumulation of native culture, while exploring how the cultures live in the modern society indicates a profound modern significance. It is becoming more and more important for China’s art to build its own system and manifest its value by its own voice and language.
“Transformation • Creation” means that not only to inherit and develop its traditional culture, but also to understand and innovate from the modern life. In order to confront the changing society and multifold culture, sculptors should try to explore in the process of growing, while seeking possibilities from traditional culture and absorbing different nourishment from western mode. Xi Jinping, the general secretary once proposed, “We must pass our traditional culture from generation to generation, while keeping pace with the times. Our basic attitudes to the traditional culture are making the past serve the present, weeding through the old to bring forth the new. And that’s how we achieve creative transformation and innovative development on it.” As for sculptors, attention should be focused on matching the spiritual state, cultural connotation, and artistic value of their work with contemporary culture, creating various stories, characters and themes in order to inspire cultural innovation.
China·Wuhu The 8th “Liu Kaiqu Award” International Sculpture Exhibition encourages sculptors to adopt new thinking in their creation. With joint efforts of sculptors, the public and the government, we hope to see more and more excellent works having the whole country in mind and the whole world in view, and concerning for the contemporary out of the traditional culture.
