ORIGIN
It seems that art is far from science. However, as Gustave Flaubert, the French writer in the mid-19th century said, “Art will be scientific while science will be artistic and they finally converge at the peak of the mountain of civilization.
As a matte of fact, art and science are never separated. Their fusion has become more and more obvious with their respective development. Mr. Tsung-Dao Lee, Chinese American physicist, says in Art and Science, “The common foundation of science and art is human creativity, and their goals are all to pursue the universalism of the truth….The relationship of science and art is close related to duality of wisdom and emotion. The esthetics appreciation of art and the comprehend of science opinion both need wisdom. Then, the sublimation of feeling is inextricably linked to emotion. …Therefore, art and science are inseparable. They both pursue the universalism of the truth. The universalism must be rooted in nature, and the natural exploration is the highest expression of human beings’ creativity. In fact, as the two sides of a coin, science and art derive from the noblest part of human’s activities, and both pursue profundity, universality, eternity and meaningfulness.
Sculpture Department of Art Academy, Tsinghua University not only inherits the tradition, but it constantly explores the academic foreland guided by “art and science. The department has made development plans, which includes course, exhibitions and seminars, for kinetic sculpture. In recent years, both in the east and the west, sculpture has been in the stage of exploring materials, shapes and formation. Kinetic sculpture has come into live because of the updating science in the 21st century. It not only overturns the sculpture’s static state and spices up the public environment, but the much more important is its thinking method doesn’t strays from sculpture’s formation. Recent years, the development of science and technology has influenced on the shape of sculpture, even the sculpture content, more and more strongly. The discussion on kinetic arts has not been limited to the difference of dynamic and static. “Kinetic” has had a wider idea. That is spark from the collision of frontier technology and sculpture.
Therefore, we are planning to hold the first China International Kinetic Art Exhibition.
From September 21st to October 1st, 2015, Motion ·Action -The First China International Kinetic Art Exhibition was held successfully at Art Gallery in Art Academy Tsinghua University.
The exhibition was sponsored by China Sculpture Institute, Art Academy Tsinghua University and China Literature and Art Foundation, and was undertaken by Sculpture Department, Art Academy, Tsinghua University. It was the first exhibition which blended science and technology into sculpture. The exhibition showed 31 excellent kinetic works from home and abroad in kind and over 40 wonderful kinetic sculpture videos. Meanwhile, the exhibition showed the kinetic art teaching situation of home and abroad in mode of literature. The seminar invited the experts, scholars and artists in related area. They discussed the background, teaching and practice of Chinese kinetic sculpture. The seminar drew the attention and good reputation from the sculpture circle and all parts of society.
In order to get immediate attention to kinetic art development situation of home abroad, to show new works and good works, to communicate and to inspect the influence of technical progress on sculptures, the Kinetic Art Exhibition will be held every tow years. In September, 2017, the Second Kinetic Art exhibition will be held in Changchun, Jilin Province. The exhibition will be a special exhibition of the Fifth Changchun Sculpture Conference. Now we collect works from all over the world.
OUR TOPIC
The topic of the exhibition is Motion·Action.
The topic comes from the motto of Tsinghua University: The movement of heaven is full of power. Thus the superior man makes himself strong and untiring. The earth''s condition is receptive devotion. Thus the superior man who has breadth of character carries the outer world.
The motto means that a gentleman should be strong, untiring, virtuous and inclusive.
Tian means the world except the nature and humans. Yi refers to humans’ minds and wisdom, and means the meanings of the works as well. Xing and Dong are the sculpture external shape, and stands for the spirit of exploring and practice, just like our principal Mei Yiqi said, “Actions speak louder than words.”
